Getting to know leather
The Key manufacturing process of our Job
Tanning
Tanning is the first phase of leather processing. The raw material is subjected to chemical and mechanical treatments to promote its conservation and preserve its main characteristics. In the “Wet blue” tanning type, the use of chrome gives the leather a light blue base and a high degree of softness and dyeability. In the “Wet white” tanning, vegetable and synthetic tannins offer excellent softness and perfect dyeing even for the lightest colors. The absence of chromium also translates into a benefit for the environment because it soesn’t require special disposal procedures..
Dyeing
The hides are subjected to a new tanning phase which aims to improve their characteristics. This treatment gives the leather greater structure, softness and resistance, also thanks to the fattening operations with specific oils. In the retanning phase the hides can be treated with chromium salts, tannins or other types of salts. With the dyeing, which takes place in special aluminum barrels, the hides take on the color suitable for the subsequent final finishing. The dyes may be water-soluble, natural or synthetic..
Drying
Wet hides are pressed and dried through three methods: “Wet frame”: the hides are placed on special frames and secured with pliers, then they go through a heated and humidified tunnel which makes them very light and soft; “Air-air convector”: dried at a low temperature in a very long tunnel, without the use of pliers, the hides retreat naturally, offering greater softness and fluidity; “Vacuum”: the hides are placed between two hot plates; a ‘vacuum’ environment is created between them. The hides are dried in this tunnel, without using pliers. The final result is a very compact and structured leather.
Finishing
The leather processing ends with the finishing. At this stage, the article is perfected both in terms of aesthetic and technical aspects such as, for example, physical resistance to wear, heat and sunlight. The finishing consists in the spray application of a very thin film of resins, polyurethanes and water based colors; the hides are normally molded and softened with further drumming and staking. Finally, a last layer of fixatives is applied to maintain the properties of resistance to use and the pleasure of natural touch over time.
